Note: this feature is not supported in Business Exchange 2010 plans. How do I upgrade from Business to Enterprise Exchange 2010 account?
Intermedia offers two types of archiving services:
- Message Mirror (Basic Archiving): allows you to backup all messages sent/received by selected exchange users. The user with certain access permissions can always access archive mailbox to view/delete messages from the archive. This article describes Message Mirror service in details. If you are on Exchange 2003 plan, please read the following article: Basic Archiving Overview
-
Compliant archiving: this service allows you to archive all messages in accordance with legal documents listed below. If you subscribe to Compliant Archiving you sign the agreement with an archiving provider. Only archiving provider will have access to archive mailbox. Compliant Archiving Overview
Message Mirror is the name for the archiving available via HostPilot that was previously known as Basic Archiving in Exchange 2003. This new solution is now available on Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 platforms.
Some additional features available with Message Mirror include the following:
- Customers can now choose which mailboxes to archive, instead of only being able to archive all mailboxes. By default, all mailboxes are archived, but can be changed in HostPilot to a different “mode” where customers can choose what to archive and for which mailboxes. This includes, internal and external messages, internal messages only, and outgoing messages only.
- There is a monthly fee for Message Mirror and 2GB of disk space for this application is included in the price. Additional disk space can be added on in 2GB increments for an additional monthly fee.
Here is common scenario if you would like to use Message Mirror:
1. Enable Message Mirror. Log into HostPilot section: Email Compliance > Message Mirror > Install Message Mirror.
Once enabled, administrator (and not users) will receive an email notification and a special mailbox will be created on the server where user's messages will be forwarded. This mailbox will not appear in the Global Address List and nobody will be able to send messages to this mailbox.
2. Once installed, you can add additional disk space by choosing the Add more space link.

3. Choose what messages you would like to archive.
Message Mirror allows you to change modes to archive only certain types of messages. By default it is set to Internal and External (all messages), but can also be changed to Internal only or Outgoing only.
4. Choose mailboxes you would like to mirror.
To manage the list of mailboxes that are set to be archived, navigate to Users page MS Exchange tab. Here you can select any mailboxes you wish to remove from archiving by de-selecting the check box next to the name in the MessageMirror column and choosing the Proceed button. Note: users will not receive notifications that their mailboxes were mirrored.
5. Set permissions for users who will have access to Message Mirror mailbox.
To choose which mailboxes have read access to the archive, navigate to Services > MS Exchange Server > MessageMirror. Please choose All Mailboxes from the pull down menu under Access Permissions to Message Mirror. This will give a list of all of the mailboxes enabled; from here you can choose to set any to No Access. They will not be able to access the archive mailbox.
6. View MessageMirror content.
Now the user with access permissions can open archive mailbox in his or her Outlook profile or Outlook Web Access, using "MessageMirror" as a name of the archive mailbox. Please refer to the articles to find more information about how to open a mailbox:
