Requirements for RPC over HTTP(s) Export Tool

RPC over HTTP(s) Export Tool is designed to pull data from the remote Exchange server. Data exported from the remote server is then imported into Intermedia mailboxes. The process goes seemlessly for end users.

In order to use the tool, we need the following information:

1. FQDN of back-end Exchange server (Source to pull mailbox data from)

If the FQDN of the back-end server is an internal only address (ie exchserver.domain.local), please provide us with a public IP address that NATs to the back-end.

2. RPC HTTP Server URL (typically Outlook Web Access URL)

If RPC over HTTP is not enabled, network administrator should adjust firewall settings to allow connections from Intermedia IP address for ALL ports. Also please make sure the traffic coming in from those ranges is properly NATed to the back end server. This is the equivalent of being on the network and using regular MAPI instead of RPC over HTTP. Please contact Support to obtain information about IP ranges.

3. List of UserPrincipalName (UPN's) and sAMAccountName attributes for mailboxes to pull.

Please make sure that:

  • Users are not hidden from Exchange Global Address List
  • Check that the user has mailboxes enabled for MAPI. Sometimes users will be enabled for OWA but not for MAPI.

4. Exmerge credentials

Exchange 2003: MS KB article details the procedure on setting up Exmerge credentials http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292509.
Exchange 2007: the "ExMerge" style user must have:

  • Exchange View Only Server Administrators role
  • Send As and Receive As extended rights (you may use Add-ADPermission command in Exchange Management Shell)
  • Full Access set for all mailboxes that we need to pull data from (you may use Set-MailboxPermission command) .
Note: We do not require administrative credentials to login to a remote Exchange server and cannot use them for this task (for security and liability reasons).

Alternatevely, you can provide a list of passwords with matching mailboxes.

5. NTLM OR Basic authentication.

If you are not sure what authentication type is used in your environment, you may check that in Outlook profile. In Outlook navigate to Tools > Account Settings > doubleclick Exchange account > hit More Settings button. Then switch to Connection tab and hit Exchange Proxy settings button. Authentication settings are available in the bottom of the window.
